The commencement of Metro services on two new routes, Joka-Taratala and Garia-Ruby, will soon simplify commuting in Kolkata.

By August of next year, authorities anticipate launching the service on the East-West Metro, which connects Salt Lake City and Howrah through Kolkata. However, due to various unavoidable circumstances, the East-West Metro has experienced considerable delays.

On November 10, a speed trial was conducted on the Taratala-Joka stretch of the Metro in the presence of the commissioner of railway safety. During the trial, the train reached a maximum speed of 61 kmph, covering 6.5 km in 10 minutes.

Md. Latief Khan, CRS, NF circle, in the presence of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited executive director Amit K Roy, Joka depot’s project director Rakesh Kumar, AGM (Electrical) S N Das and GM (mechanical) B K Roy, and other RVNL officials inaugurated the administrative office and the automatic train washing plant at the depot, the second largest after Noapara. After a thorough inspection of the railway lines and the six stops, a trial run was made. At 5.51 p.m., the rake left Taratala station, and at 6.01 p.m., it arrived at Joka station.

Mr. Khan also looked at the Joka Depot’s station control panel, the fire pump, the fire detection system, the points, the sub-stations, the escalators, the lifts, and various amenities for station patrons.

According to the agencies, the Joka-Esplanade and New Garia-Airport lines are expected to commence operating in Phase 1 within the upcoming weeks. The first train trials for these sections were conducted on September 15 and 24, respectively. Both portions will operate without signals and with only a single train.

By the beginning of December, they plan to put a portion of the other completed Metro corridor—the New Garia-Ruby segment of the New Garia-Airport corridor—into operation.
